10 Steps To Feeling Better: #2 Exercise
10/11/2021 (Permalink)
It’s time for step number two in our 10 Steps To Feeling Better blog series: Exercise!
I think we have all heard that exercise is important for mental health, but most of us still don’t exercise regularly. Only 19.3% of Americans regularly exercise each day. The benefits of exercising regularly aren’t only the numerous health benefits, but also make you smarter, happier, improve sleep, and gives you a better body image.
Not only does exercise have so many benefits, but not exercising is also detrimental. Being sedentary can actually cause decreased executive functioning. Reaction time is also slowed with less activity.
Scientifically, exercise is the best way to boost mental function. Exercise is even more effective than brain training, medication, supplements, and meditation. Exercise also has the added benefit of reducing the risk of dementia.
Exercise is one of the best ways to improve happiness; it wards off depression and anxiety, boosts self-esteem, and improves sleep. Exercise is known to improve endorphins as well, which causes a diminished perception of pain.
Studies have also shown that body image is improved after exercise. This positive body image was shown to happen even when there was no real physical improvement.
The SERVPRO of South Mecklenburg County challenges you to spend 30 minutes a day exercising this week. Check back next week for the next step to feeling better!
