Can Air Condition Units Cause Water Damage

Air conditioning is a must in your Charlotte, NC, but are you aware of the damage that A/C units can cause? Without regular maintenance air condition units can leak and cause significant water damage. So what are the causes of an A/C unit leak in your Pineville, NC, home?
Condensate Drain Line: The condensate drain is a critical component of the HVAC system. As your air conditioner runs it creates humidity, that moisture has to go somewhere so the condensate line helps remove the water from your home. If the drain is clogged, that condensation will back up and leak causing mold and other water damage. If the drain line has been disconnected or was not installed properly this can result in standing water.
Drain Pan: Before water goes down the condensate line it is collected in the drain pan. If the drain pan is not cleaned or traded properly it can rust, crack or mold. Any of the issues can cause water to be pushed elsewhere. Once again, these issues can result in mold and other water damage.
Condensate Pump: In order for water to travel through the drain line, the condensate pump has to push it through the system. If that pump fails, the water won’t be able to make it through the condensate line.
Evaporator Coils: While the most noticeable effect of a dirty evaporator coil is a high energy bill and warm air, it can also be the cause of water damage. With buildup on the evaporator coils condensation can develop and cause leaks. Regular HVAC maintenance includes cleaning the coils to prevent issues like this.
Any of these issues can be prevented by regular HVAC maintenance, but if you do have water damage caused by an A/C unit leak, be sure to contact SERVPRO of South Mecklenburg County, your Matthews, NC, water restoration company.
