Flood Preparedness For Vacation Homes

Do you have a vacation home? Whether that home is in Charlotte, Pineville, Matthews, or somewhere else, there is always a risk of flooding. Is your vacation home prepared for a flood? Your safety considerations will help keep you and your guests safe.
Think about the dangers of a flood and how that could affect your guests. Are there large trees nearby that could fall? Are power lines nearby? Think of all the possible dangers in the area when planning to prep your vacation home.
Create a document for “What to do in an emergency” for your guests. Post this document in visible places like the fridge. Put maps, local shelters and emergency contact numbers and your contact information in case of a flood or other emergency.
Write up a guide for emergencies with instructions for gas or battery powered items for use if the power goes out. Create a power outage kit with battery-powered flashlights, extra batteries, and a backup phone charger. Seal the items in a water-tight container. Add a fee that will be charged to guests who open the kit in a non-emergency situation to prevent guests from opening the kit unnecessarily.
Consider providing emergency provisions like canned or dried food. This is an inexpensive way to ensure you or your guests don’t go hungry in a severe situation.
Consider a limited liability policy in your rental agreement to avoid a situation where guests demand a refund if the power is out for an hour or two.
Any emergency plan that you do create should be shared with anyone who works on the property or visits the property.
Whatever you choose to include in your emergency plan and your kits, be sure to make all guests aware of the plan and supplies.
