Labor Day Safety

Labor Day weekend means a weekend of hanging out with friends and family and relaxing by the pool or on the beach. All that fun can mean more chances for disaster to strike. To keep everyone safe for the last weekend of summer we wanted to share some Labor Day safety tips.
Drive Safe
If you’re planning on venturing out of Charlotte, NC, and driving to your destination be sure to follow these safety tips. Even though Americans are driving less this year, there has been a sharp increase in car accidents and deaths related to driving. Keep yourself and your family safe as you travel.
- Only drive when you are well-rested and alert
- Ensure all passengers are using seatbelts properly
- Observe speed limits and the rules of the road
- Always turn on headlights at dusk and during inclement weather
- Don’t drink and drive. Always have a designated driver available or take a taxi
- Avoid distractions like phones while driving
- Don’t follow other vehicles too closely.
Heat Safety
August is hot in North Carolina, and heat exhaustion can mean missing out on activities, or worse an afternoon in the hospital.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids like water or other hydrating drinks. Avoid drinks with caffeine and alcohol as they can make heat exhaustion worse.
- Avoid extreme temperature changes. Moving from an air-conditioned place to the hot afternoon sun can be a difficult adjustment.
- Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing to stay cool in the sun.
- Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
- Postpone outdoor activities for later in the evening once it has cooled down.
Beach & Pool Safety
There’s no better way to beat the summer heat than spending the day by the pool or on the beach. There is always danger present when spending time outside near the water, follow our safety tips to ensure the safety of you and those around you.
- If you are swimming in open water like the ocean, lake, or river, be aware of currents, boats, and other dangers that are not normally present in pools and ensure you are skilled enough to swim in such an environment
- Ensure that a lifeguard is present wherever you are swimming
- Never swim under the influence of alcohol
- Don’t swim when you are tired, and ensure you always have enough energy to swim back to shore
- Don’t dive into water unless you know the depth
- Make sure everyone in your party knows how to spot rip currents, and what to do if they get caught in a rip current. Tell all children and adults to swim parallel to shore until they are out of the current and then swim to shore. If they are unable to swim to shore, tell them to float or tread water until they are free of the current, or someone can come help.
Stay Safe Outside
If you are spending your weekend camping or in a remote area, you might find yourself with limited emergency access. Before you head to your destination take these steps to keep everyone safe.
- Take a CPR certification course to help in case emergency services are delayed getting to your location. First aid courses can teach how to treat severe wounds, broken bones, bee stings, snake bites, and more
- Plan your trip according to the skill level of those with you
- Bring enough water to avoid dehydration
- Share travel plans with a family member or friend
- Bring a first aid kit
