Washing Machine Flood Prevention

Help! My Washing Machine Flooded

No one ever expects their washing machine to malfunction, and people often don’t think about the damage it can cause when water begins to spread throughout their home. Save yourself from the panic of a flood and make sure you take these preventive measures that are much more cost-effective than a leak.

Washer floor tray

If you can’t afford to replace a leaking washing machine, or just want to make sure to protect against future leaks, a water catching tray under your washing machine is a simple, inexpensive, and effective way to prevent water damage. These can often be purchased for around $20 and easily slide underneath your washing machine.

Replace your water supply hoses

Over time water supply hoses can become brittle and leak or even burst. Check them periodically and replace old hoses with new tubes. Keep in mind, every time the washing machine is moved the tubes can have added pressure that could cause damage. New tubes should consist of flexible plastic tubing encased in a stainless steel braided exterior. The safest option is to upgrade to an auto-shutoff connector hose that will protect against catastrophic water damage by automatically shutting off the water supply if excess water flow is sensed. Basic hoses should only cost about $20 and can be used on washing machines as well as dishwashers, ice makers, and other plumbing fixtures around your home.

Single-lever shutoff valve

If you are conscientious and want to have a safer option in your home you should consider installing a single-lever shutoff valve. This allows you to replace your dual faucets with a lever that lets you control both hot and cold water at the same time. This is a low-cost solution that is easy to use as long as you can remember to shut it off after each load of laundry. You can pick these up at most hardware stores for about $35.

Flood protection device

An automatic water leak detection device prevents flooding by notifying you of a leak so that you can shut off both the hot and cold water supply to the washing machine when sensors detect a leak. These devices are quick and easy to install by homeowners and provide 24/7 protection against damage caused by washing machine floods. These devices work by sounding an alarm, and some will even notify you over the phone so you can be aware of leaks as soon as they happen. These have a wide range of prices but can be as little as $30 up to a few hundred dollars.

Automatic washing machine water shutoff valve and leak sensor

This “intelligent” valve does everything to protect against catastrophic water damage from a burst inlet hose connected to a washing machine that is in use or unattended. It allows water to flow only when it senses that the washing machine is turned on and stops water from flowing if the machine is turned off. It also stops water from flowing if it senses excessive water flow or detects a leak. This device is easy enough to hook up yourself. These can be found online easily for under $300. This is a great investment to prevent all washing machine leaks regardless of the cause of the leak.
