Weather Safety: Fog

I don't know about you, but I love fall weather. I love a cloudy, misty day and golden leaves. It is a perfect excuse to snuggle up with a good book and comfort food on the couch- with no other place to go. However, it isn't as wonderful if you have to travel in this weather.
Fog can create dangerous driving conditions- but don't worry! There are simple things you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones!
When you are traveling in fog:
- Slow down! Driving at posted speeds can be hazardous, so consider driving 5 mph under the speed limit and be even more cautious on windy roads.
- Use your low beam headlights- high beam lights will be spread and reflected in the fog's water droplets, while low beams give you greater visibility. If your car has specialized fog lights, don’t forget to turn them on, as these will offer the best visibility on a cloudy day.
- Do not change lanes or pass other vehicles. Doing so can be dangerous and cause accidents.
- Pay attention to the road and what is going on- now is not the time to be distracted! Select music and setup directions before leaving the driveway and have a passenger assist with any other controls throughout the ride.
- Leave plenty of distance between you and others. It may take longer to see in front of your car. Reducing braking time and moisture on the road could increase braking distance. Leaving extra room can prevent accidents.
- If you must pull off on the side of the road, pull off as far as safely possible. Then turn off your headlights and use your hazard lights, and set your parking brake to avoid being hit by cars that may not realize you’ve pulled over.
Before driving in the fog, head to the State Farm and the Weather.GOV websites for more helpful tips.
