Did you know that challenging your beliefs strengthens your mind? Learning new things is important, but more so adults need to be challenging the beliefs they have had all their lives.
It can be easy to take information in and accept it without checking its validity, but the next time you read that news article or click that link, challenge that information.
Challenging yourself isn’t exclusive to the things you already know, you can also strengthen your mind with a new language, learning to play an instrument, or something as little as taking a new route to work. Adult learning isn’t only about taking in information, we need to challenge our perception. By doing what we know, we use the same pathways in our brain, and when we challenge ourselves, we pave new pathways in our brain.
Challenging yourself creates willpower, and willpower is linked to a higher IQ. Willpower and self-discipline are linked to higher performance than IQ alone. Willpower has been shown to be the single most important habit for success.
One way to increase willpower is to actively change a habit. By doing something as little as changing posture, you are increasing your willpower. Changing something little like your posture can affect more than just your back, it can also help you perform better at tasks that have no relation to posture. Changing your posture isn’t the only way to increase willpower, the key is to concentrate on changing habitual behavior.
The SERVPRO of South Mecklenburg County team wants to challenge you to do the things you might be scared of. About 75% of people regret not doing something, while only 25% of people regret doing something. So push yourself to do those things you are scared of because you are far more likely to regret not doing it.
Our favorite way to challenge yourself is taking a hike; we recommend Crowders Mountain State Park, which is less than an hour from Pineville, NC.
If you’re looking for a habitual behavior to change try out a habit that healthy people do every day. Make yourself breakfast every morning, drink enough water, exercise for 30 minutes, get 8 hours of sleep, and slow down and eat mindfully. This short list offers just a few ideas for healthy habits, but the best habit for you is one you can accomplish. Start small with one habit and grow from there.
