It’s the last post in our 10 Steps To Feeling Better series, and we really hope you are starting to feel better. And if you’re still looking for a bit more help, keep reading to learn how our final tip could be the answer to your struggles.
We have all heard “fake it till you make it,” and while that phrase often invites a few groans, it’s true. There’s a reason those hopelessly optimistic people are often as happy as they seem, and it’s not because they are pretending.
All of those positive thoughts can bring more joy into your life. Both physical and mental health improves when one has a more optimistic outlook on life.
Optimism isn’t just good for a mood boost, it also improves heart health and boosts the immune system. That boost in health isn’t just good for fighting off colds, optimism also leads to faster recovery from illnesses.
Being aware and actively trying to be optimistic in order to feel happier actually makes it more effective. So spending time being optimistic and trying to have a more positive outlook on life could benefit you more than just be passively optimistic.
Optimism is linked to overall better health and a longer lifespan.
The US Army teaches soldiers optimism in order to create “mental toughness.” The Army teaches us to think of things as temporary setbacks that are changeable. Soldiers should think that things will go away quickly and that they can do something to fix them. So next time there is a setback in your life, don’t think about the negatives, instead know that this will be over soon, and think about what actions you can take to fix the problem at hand.
Overconfidence can actually increase your ability to complete a task. Being overconfident can increase productivity and improve teamwork. When a difficult task is thrown your way, don’t dwell on the skills you don’t have, instead, be optimistic that you will get this done and it will be great.
Try adding a little optimism and confidence to your routine, whether it be telling yourself you can run a bit farther or setting a goal for work. Adding an optimistic outlook to each and every day isn’t hard and doesn’t take much time, so give it a try and see if you start noticing the positive effects.
