You may have heard there are different categories of water, but do you know what the categories mean? Today we are going to explain what category 2 water is, and what it means when it’s in your home.
Flood water is categorized based on how contaminated it is with substances that pose a threat to human and animal health. Category 1 is clean water that is drinkable from its source. To learn more about category 1 water, check out our previous blog post. Category 3 water is highly contaminated. So, what is category 2? Oftentimes category 2 water is referred to as greywater. This is because category 2 water contains some contaminants that may cause illness if swallowed.
Category 2 water can be classified as such straight from the source, or it can be a result of category 1 water that has come into contact with contaminated materials. Potential sources for greywater include:
- Overflow from washing machines
- Overflow from dishwasher
- Water flushed from sink drains
- Stagnant category 1 water
- Category 1 water that has come into contact with building materials
Still a little confused? We understand, with so many different possible sources, it can get confusing. Let's say you had a pipe burst on the second floor of your Charlotte, NC, home or business. The water on the second floor would be classed as category 1, if water seeps through the floor and onto the first floor that water is then classified as category 2.
